The Law Discipline 

 

In March 2014, LAMC and its Law/Paralegal Program were selected as one of the 24 Calif. Community Colleges to participate in the California Community College Pathways to Law School initiative of the Council on Access and Fairness of the California State Bar (EV 1).

Following acceptance, the law/paralegal program moved forward with the initiative in the following ways:

(1) established the program/curriculum requirements (EV 2), created a Law Advisory, and met in November 2014 (EV 3), and May 2015 (EV 4).  (4) Created a pathway between our local high schools and Mission by having our law faculty teach our paralegal law classes at at San Fernando High School for Spring 2015/Fall 2015, Northridge Academy for Fall 2015, and Monroe for Spring 2016.  (5) Developing new curriculum for those high school classes based on Street Law Curriculum (http://streelaw.org). Currently we are teaching our Law 10 - Intro to Law class at those schools. (6) Formed a Law Club which holds meetings twice a month (EV 5). (7) Distributed a Pathways Flyer extolling the benefits of the Pathways Program at the Spring Student Welcome Back Day (EV 6). (8) Held our first Speakers Series, hosting Argentinian Human Rights and Fullbright Scholar Federico Efron (EV 7) (9) Sponsored a "Law Day at USC Law School" for both Mission College and San Fernando High School Law class students (EV 8). (10) Collaborating with the Los Angeles Superior Court to create a Student Internship for our LAMC Paralegal Students commencing September 1, 2015 (EV 9).  (11) Creating a multi-campus collaborative, including San Fernando, Northridge Academy, and Monroe High School, along with participation of AJ and Law students at Mission in a DUI Awareness Campaign - "Every 15 minutes" in Fall 2015, and a Mock DUI Manslaughter Trial in Spring 2016 (EV 10). (12) Created a comprehensive libugide website for the Pathways Program with assistance from Sheila MacDowell in the library - (EV 11) (13) Created a Pathways Resource Center in the Library - LRC 217 - where we mentor and tutor our law students. (EV 12)
