PLANNING THE TOTAL COURSE

November 18, 2006

9:00am - 3:30pm

Rm. 211

UCLA Extension Administration Building

10995 Le Conte Ave.

Westwood

Parking

* Stop at the Westwood Blvd. Kiosk on campus (circled on map) to pick up a courtesy Permit Card and parking sticker before going to Parking Lot 1. Without these, you will be charged $8.00 for parking, or you may be ticketed ($40.00) by UCLA Campus Parking Enforcement. You may also be ticketed if you park in a place or space not designated for this event. UCLA Extension has no authority, nor influence to cancel, reverse, reimburse or otherwise affect your responsibility to pay parking tickets.

* Tell the kiosk attendant that you are attending the Instructor Development Workshop, "Planning the Total Course" at the Extension Building. (The attendants do not have a list of individual names attending this session.)

* When you receive your permit card and sticker, request directions to parking. Occasionally, areas of the campus are under construction and the usual routes are closed. Lot 1 is a multi-storied parking structure just north of the Extension Building on Gayley (see map).

* Outside of Lot 1, a sign reads, “UCLA Medical Plaza Parking." Enter the structure beneath the sign stating, "Staff Entrance." You may park in the "Blue" or "Regular Permit" spaces. Do not park in spaces marked, "Blue X."

* The Extension Building (circled on map) is on the corner of Gayley and Le Conte.

Note: Your department may have issued you a parking permit. Please check permit carefully to see if it is valid for Saturdays. If it is not, you will need to follow the instructions above for obtaining a one-day permit. If you do not obtain the temporary Saturday permit, you may be ticketed by UCLA Campus Parking Enforcement. We will not be able to cancel any parking tickets you receive.

Planning the Total Course

Inadequate course preparation is one of the most frequently heard complaints about instructors from students. How will you organize your material and yourself? What are the key elements of course design?

In this workshop, learn to:

· Establish the aim of the course

· Develop the syllabus/course outline

· Prepare session-by-session guides (lesson plans)

· Integrate course materials into the overall course design

If you are an online instructor exclusively:

Many aspects of adult learning and teaching crossover to all delivery modes: on-the-ground classes, videoconferences, online. In that respect, this overview program has value regardless of your teaching venue. The series, however, was not designed to address issues specific to the online environment. For those issues, Extension provides a separate training program: the Online Instructor Development Program. This program takes place online, matching the training mode with the eventual teaching mode. For further information on the training program for online teaching, contact your program representative.
