Evolution

So far, no single program beats Microsoft Outlook's combination of e-mail features, calendaring, and contacts. But one program, Novell's free, open-source Evolution, comes close. Though mostly enjoyed by Linux users as part of the Gnome window manager included with many distributions, Novell and some kind-hearted Evolution fans have created a Windows version as well. Though not an Outlook clone, Evolution offers the same general PIM landscape, including mail, contact, calendar, note, and task modules. Features include must-haves like rule-based filtering and spam detection, HTML-format messages, and PGP signing and encryption, and the ability to share calendars with others via the Web. --Scott Spanbauer

Today's Second Look:

Hot Keyboard Pro

If your PC mouse were a pet mouse, all that running around would make it one skinny little beast. You can ease up on your mouse--and yourself--with a keyboard utility like Hot Keyboard Pro. Hot Keyboard Pro's setup wizard scans your programs and offers you a list of functions that could benefit from hotkeys. Keyboard macros it suggests include launching programs, adjusting volume, pasting the current date, pasting your e-mail address, and so forth, but you can specify your own as well. Hot Keyboard Pro also looks at your system to make specific suggestions; for instance, it suggested hotkeys for several functions of my music player software. Hot Keyboard Pro suggests key combos for these as well, although you can change them to your own. After initial setup, you can navigate the Explorer-like macro tree to edit the key combo or its action type--or to schedule functions. Of course, hotkeys are no use if you can't remember the key combos, so Hot Keyboard Pro makes it easy to pop up and print out its Reference Card. --Laura Blackwell
