Minutes of 1-11-07

Meeting commenced: 1:30 p.m - present: Geri Shapiro, David Jordan, Dorothy Mundt, Dani Condon, Marcella Lozano

1. Alzheimers Seminars - Sandi Lampert provided a flyer from the Alzheimers Associations of possible guest speakers, and seminars. The Committee reviewed the flyer, and decided to have two different speakers and seminars. The first seminar was on Memory Loss in Senior Adults and how to handle the behavior problems, and the second seminar was in what resources are available to caretakers who have elder parents suffering from memory loss. Sandi will set up the dates and times for these speakers.

2. LAMC Spring Ice Cream Social - March 08, 2007. The Committee decided that a good activity to promote for everyone is to have an Ice Cream Social. It will be scheduled for March 8, 2007 at 2 pm, location TBA. We are going to ask the AFT, and Classified Unions, and President's Office to chip in for the event. It is possible that we will have State Staff Development funds by then, and we can use those.

3. Denim Day and Clothesline Project - April 18, 2007 - Each year the LACCD declares April as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the middle of April as "Denim Day". In past years, Staff Development has combined two activities on the same day - Denim Day and the Clothesline Project - see http://www.denimdayinla.org/ and http://www.clotheslineproject.org/ . We will ask Prof. Myriam Mekelburg if she can organize her Sociology class again to do these project in the Quad.

4. LAMC Employee Appreciation Day by the Fountain - May 3rd, Weds. at 3 pm . In previous years we have had an Appreciation Day. The Committee decided to have an event in the afternoon - similar to a "English High Tea" - with cookies, tea, and coffee. The Committee will look into getting some sort of appreciation gift for those who attend.

5. Brown Bag Lunches - The Committee would like to have faculty and staff provide talks on interesting topics which can benefit the College Community, including the students. David will email faculty and invite faculty to volunteer giving talks on topics of interest and importance.

6. Tech Ed - David has negotiated a one time payment of $1500 to Tech Ed for any and all staff and faculty who want to attend the Tech Ed Conference on March 26, 27 and 28th in Ontario - see http://techedevents.org/2007 - The Committee will review the schedule to determine which events are of worth, and then consult with Administration to see if staff can attend certain events during their day time work schedule.

7. New Staff Development Funds - The State has approved Staff Development Funding for Community Colleges in California. We have received notice that funds will be disbursed to Mission in the near future which will assist our Committee to achieve its projects and goals for 2007.

Our next meetings in 2007:

February 8, 22, March 1, 15, April 5, 19, May 3, 17, June 7, 21
