law10-late start

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 6 months ago

 Welcome to Law 10 - Intro to Law - Section 0157 - Late Start   This class is entirely online with no meetings on campus. It is also a late start. That means that 15 weeks of work is covered in 12 weeks - starting 10/06. You can however set up your moodle account and then login to class. I am your online instructor and your on campus instructor for our hybrid students. Your online instructor is Prof. Jon Jackman and his information is located at http://lamission.edu/law/faculty/jackman

You can now login to your moodle class to post your introduction, How to Study Law and Good Legal Writing, The Uses of Argument and Analytic Thinking under the forums of Law 10 Intro to Law  -  . The enrollment key for this section is  white55 - you will use this to enter the class

First you login to moodle at http://moodle.lamission.edu - you then set up your account with a username and passcode, and then you go to your law 10 Late Start class at  http://moodle.lamission.edu/course/view.php?id=307

 If you would like to have personal tutoring on how to navigate moodle, login, and post to the forums contact our tutor Kelly at 818-364-7600 ext. 4129 and email kps70@hotmail.com

Read information on moodle at http://1moodle.pbwiki.com.

Print out the duedates at http://duedates.pbwiki.com and purchase your textbook - http://lamission.edu/law/textbooks

Enjoy your class and work hard.

 Please read information at http://welcome.pbwiki.com

and also read getting started at http://profj.us/start

also read the syllabus - general at http://abogado.pbwiki.com/syllabus-general

Some notes:

 1. No late work is allowed - see http://profj.us/late - Do not login to your class at 11:50 pm on the due date to post your work, as the link closes down at 11:55 pm and you may be prevented from completing your work. You should probably not take more than one or two classes during the summer session A and summer session B because so much work is required.

2.  You can signup for moodle at  http://moodle.lamission.edu/login/signup.php - you will provide your name, email address, etc, and when you receive a confirming email at your home email, then click on it, and you will have joined moodle. If you do not receive an email within 20 minutes, check your junk or spam email since it might be there, and if not email me so I can help you get logged in.

3 The quizzes in Law 10 are based upon the 10th edition of West Business Law, so if you use WBL 9th edition you do so at your own risk

4 . You can find the Syllabus for your class at http://profj.us/currentclasses

We use West Business Law 10th Edition for Law 1,2,10 and 19. Many students email about using the 9th edition as it is much cheaper. The answer is as follows: if you plan on only taking Bus. Law 1 as a transferable class, then you should probably just download the 10 or so chapters we cover in that class from Ichapters- WLB If you take Law 1,2, 10 and 19 for the paralegal certificate, then it would be better to just purchase the entire book and use it for the four (4) classes. If you decided to use the 9th Edition, you do so at your "own risk". The quizzes in each one of the four (4) classes is based upon the 10th edition, and NOT the 9th edition. You may get differing text and answers to the law quizzes in each class, and again you do so at "your own risk". If you purchase the 10th edition from the bookstore, you can re-sell it back to them for 50% (I believe). Contact the LAMC Bookstore about their "sale back" book policy.

5. Logging in during first week of class is mandatory

It is mandatory to login to your online moodle classrooms during the first week of class. Thereafter, enrollment will be locked, and you will not be able to add yourself to the moodle classroom. You must then contact the Director of the Program, Prof J. and only after providing a valid reason for "not logging" in during the first week, will you be allowed to enter the classroom.

6. In the Fall 2005 semester, we piloted a new program - the "tutoring program" - see program guidelines at http://paralegaltutors.pbwiki.com We have an excellent team of tutors who can help you with any questions you might have. Please take advantage of contacting them. They were all excellent students in our program who graduated from our program and who have encountered all of the same problems you will face with our law materials.

7. Please look at the appeals process (for our online students) we use in our law quizzes - http://profj.us/appeals - Our tutors act as the Court of Appeals, and Prof J. is the Supreme Court. You can only appeal 3-4 questions for each quiz and you should do so immeidately after taking the quiz. Follow the appeals process carefully.

8.Improving your grades

The quizzes under Law 1, 2, 10, 19 and 13 are taken fro the West Bus. Law Textbook. The questions are formulated by the authors of the textbook, and not any of the LAMC law faculty. The quiz questions generally require application of your materials, and "critical thinking". You may find these difficult. If you receive lower scores than you are accustomed to receiving, then look at this information - http://profj.us/26w/law1/improvemc.htm on how to improve your scores. You can also contact your online tutors for suggestions. A few other ideas you can do it to get a "study partner". This is how you do that. You look under the forums, the introductions and postings on the other questions and see who you might like to partner up with. Then go to etudes messages, and click on "send email", scroll down to find the person, then email them a nice email asking them if they want to partner up. You can work on quizzes and assignments. Remember, though, on assignments you must post, in your own language, your answers to the assignments. Do not copy your partners work. You can discuss the quiz questions and argue back and forth until you come to a better understanding of the answers, and then post the answers to the quizzes. Generally you should be spending a fair amount of time studying. If your scores and grades do not improve after increasing your efforts and time spent studying, then you will need to make changes. Contact your tutors or online instructors for ideas, suggestions and comments.

9.  Read resources at http://welcome.pbwiki.com/resources

11. look at the classwiki at http://classwikis.pbwiki.com

12.  You can post your introduction under the moodle classroom , How to Study Law, and Good Legal Writing, The Uses of Argument and Analytic Thinking. First go to the discussion link (icon of two faces facing each other), and then click on reply and post your discussion.

13. a note on forum discussions - everyone is subscribed to the forum discussions. This means that on each forum you will get a copy of the what each student posts to the forum discussion. This may be annoying, however it creates the feeling of a real classroom discussion, so please patient when you receive your classmates discussion postings.

14. Discussion questions are not graded individually, but each student is required to post under each discussion, and at the end of the session, you will receive 10% of your final grade based upon your participation in the discussion forums.

15. Grading is as follows:

Grade Distribution

Tests = 35% of your grade

Assignments = 40% of your grade

Motion to Suppress = 15% of your grade

Forum Discussions - Class participation points - posted at the end of class = 10 % of your grade

A = 90% or above

B = 80% or above

C = 70% or above

D = 60% or above

C or above is required to pass the class.

If there are links that do not load or work, or you are having problems logging in, and with moodle contact me, Prof J. to make the corrections. Fee free to contact me at either abogado@pacbell.net or jordandc@lamission.edu orr contact him at his cell phone after 7 am and before 10 pm in the evening at 818-415-2015 if you have any questions about the program,  or the web page links.

Good luck everyone. Nice having you all as students. Welcome aboard, Enjoy the class, and work hard.

Prof J.
